BACKGROUND OF ANTHONY WONG

Born in 1956, Anthony Wong’s instinctive passion for outdoor life and nature led him to embark on a career in the tourism industry in 1973 while in high school. In 1976,he and a team of enthusiastic adventurers established Asian Overland Services Tours& Travel (AOS). With his partners’ interests shifting into other endeavors, Anthony was soon single handedly building his own solo operation. Now 33 years later,Anthony’s leadership has made AOS the leading inbound tour operator for Eco tourism, Adventure, Experiential Learning and Special Interest and Incentive Tours in the country. In 1972, Anthony successfully became the first person to lead a group of students between the ages of 16 to 18 to trek up Mount Tahan, without any accompanying teacher or guide. In the 70’s also, he was the pioneer in opening Taman Negara; the largest national park in Malaysia to travelers, as well as starting homestay in Malaysia from Kampung Cherating and elped to develop this to the rest of the country in her early days. Anthony also initiated the Green Guide Certification with he help of Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) and Tan Sri Dr Salleh Mohd or who is the current President for Malaysia Nature Society, and they then got the overnment to adopt this since the late 80’s. ith his love for nature, it led him to undertake two Eco-tourism projects in the cuntry. One, being the Jungle Lodge Alang Sedayu in 1990 located at the fringe of a forest reserve area which is now being used for summer camps, team building and motivational courses, family days and many more eco activities. The other is the “Adoption of an Iban Longhouse” in Kuching in 1991 as it is the company’s belief to contribute to communitiesimpacted by tourism.

In recognition of his efforts to promote Eco-tourism in the region, he was awarded the Global Travel Award 1993 in London during the World Travel Mart In 1990, Anthony established AOS Conventions & Events, a destination managementcompany and a professional conference/congress organizer, meeting clients demand for M.I.C.E. activities in Malaysia. To-date, AOS has successfully managed groups with group size from 20 to 10,000 people including the XVIII FIGO World Congress on Gynecology and Obstetric that was held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from November 5 to 10 2006. Comments received from the delegates that this congress was the most successful in FIGO history and the most profitable. The Jungle Lodge at Alang Sedayu, Gombak Selangor was set up in 1991 by Asian Overland Services Managing Director Anthony Wong, who believed in promoting the love for the outdoors through living with nature. Wong feels that summer camp such as those organized at the Jungle Lodge help youth nurture positive attitudes, social skills caring social behavior and leadership. A well-known figure in the travel & tourism industry for over 30 years, Anthony 'Jungle' Wong is one of the pioneers of eco-tourism. He was also one of the first to make Taman Negara accessible to the world in 1974. Anthony and a team of young adventure enthusiasts established AOS in 1976. His fist job with AOS was a guide at the age of 17 years old. In 1976, he and a team of enthusiastic adventurers established Asian Overland Services Tours & Travel Sdn Bhd. His immense experiences and tireless efforts to promote eco tourism have been recognized locally and internationally with the numerous awards and accolades received. As an established and distinguished speaker,Anthony is frequently invited to give talks and seminars on issues of the travel industry, and has featured on local television networks and media on his achievements and views on sustainable tourism. His pet project, The Frangipani Langkawi Resort & Spa is a green hotel and he hopes to make it a showcase and model to encourage other hotels to shift towards greener practices.

 

History of The Jungle Lodge at Alang Sedayu,

The Jungle Lodge at Alang Sedayu, Gombak Selangor was set up in 1991 by Asian Overland Services Managing Director Anthony Wong, who believed in promoting the love for the outdoors through living with nature. Wong feels that summer camp such as those organized at the Jungle Lodge help youth nurture positive attitudes, social skills caring social behavior and leadership. A well-known figure in the travel & tourism industry for over 30 years, Anthony 'Jungle' Wong is one of the pioneers of eco-tourism. He was also one of the first to make Taman Negara accessible to the world in 1974.

 

Activities/Programmes

Participants will be taught on how to stay in the Green Living Concept where they will be introduced a few traditional ways of living without wasting carbon footprint. All the equipment will 100% be collected in the Jungle. Below are the activties:

  • Traditional Bamboo Cooking Technique - Theory & practical assignment in Outdoor-Survival Cooking using natural elements like branches, bamboo & bertam as cooking utensil to cook fish & chicken over open fire.
  • Learn the art of fire-starting using wax, twigs and wood shavings. The instructor/Orang Asli will demonstrate the correct usage of how to start a fire in the outdoor.
  • Learn to cook rice, chicken & vegetables in underground fire: The orang Asli will demonstrate the correct technique to cook chicken underground.
  • Participants will be learnt on how to create the Bertam weaving leave. There will be a demo on how to weave the Bertam Leave to make Roof with Orang Asli.
  • Handicraft–Orang Asli will also teach the participants on how to weave the Garland & Head gear.

 

Jungle Trekking

Guided tracking through primary forest to learn about some of the 15,000 plant species and the animals and insects that inhabit it. The famous trek is the river and jungle trail to the Sg. Pisang Waterfall, the Wild Boar trail, the Giant Tortoise and the World War II Bunker trail.

There will outdoor activity  where the partcipants  will be exposed  on traditional bamboo cooking, trap making, making a craft, garland & head gear making, finding herbs, blow pipe, akar kayu & fishing technique (catch & release).
